The
patriotism shown all over the United States Tuesday [05 Jun 1917] by
the young Americans should convince the pacifists and all others who
have obstructed the plans of President Wilson, that this nation is not
divided, but on the contrary stands behind the president. Over
ten million went to the registration boards and signed up in defense of
their country and homes. At no place in the nation was there any
marked demonstration by the pro-Germans or their sympathizers.
The very few that used their tongues too freely were placed under
arrest and will have plenty of time during their incarceration to
reflect on their disloyal actions. Tuesday's registration is the
best demonstration of patriotism ever shown by the American people and
if the Kaiser has carried the idea that the people of the United States
are divided or lax in their devotion to their country, he had better
forget it. If he does not forget it, it will only be a few months
before he will wish he had. The American people have no war with
the German people. They will fight for the liberation of the
people of Germany from the autocratic domination of Prussianism that
has been their curse. The American people know that our German
citizens are as desirable, as industrious and as patriotic as any of
our citizenship, and our Germans are now realizing more each day that
to defeat the Kaiser means the liberation of their relatives and
friends in Germany from the curse of Prussian militarism, that has been
grind (unreadable portion) homes and curtailing their liberties.
The patriotism displayed Tuesday was not confined to any particular
locality, it was in the air and the whole American spirit of loyalty
seemed to be beaming forth as never before.
Washburn
County came to the front with a registration of 841, which is far above
the amount estimated by the most sanguine estimators. In the city
[Spooner] there were 221, of these 97 claimed exemption and 105 no
exemption. There were 17 aliens, only one of the enemy and he has
his first papers. The registration board were Geo. B. Sage, W. H.
Cleary, O. S. Johnson, G. H. Ross.
