Delayed Birth Indices
As stated in the
introduction to the Vital Records section of this website, birth,
marriage and death events were not required until a state law went into
effect on 01 Oct 1907. While this may be a major inconvenience
when seeking genealogical data, mainly for marriage and death records,
it was even more so, and became blantantly apparent that a birth record
was necessary to establish proper identification for individuals.
This was especially true when people sought to establish Social
Security eligibility, which required a birth record. Therefore, a
system was developed to record these DELAYED BIRTHS. A vast
majority of these delayed birth registrations were filed between 1940
and 1942. People seeking to register their births were required
to do so in the county where they were born and were required to
present evidence as to the facts of their birth. Proof came from
a variety of sources, including, but not limited to, school records,
Bible records, census records, insurance records, church records, etc.
Another reason for many of these delayed birth records is due to the
fact that many births recorded earlier had no names, missing
information or wrong information. These delayed birth records
have been recorded by the county to correct previous mistakes and
omissions or to provide the information that may not have been recorded
at the time of birth. Make note that these delayed birth records
do not necessarily contain all of the information that is generally
found on an original birth record.
PLEASE NOTE: the
names in these indices are spelled as they appear in the official
county records. No attempt has been made, nor will be
made, to change or correct the spellings of these names.
Please be sure to check all spelling variants when searching for
a name.
The births indices
found with this website were compiled from the actual delayed birth
records on file at the Washburn Co. Register of Deeds Office covering
the years 1883 through 1907. Volume and page numbers have been
included to enable you to order the records you are
seeking. See ordering
information for details.
